Folks this has been one heck of a winter for us poor schmuck’s stuck living near the San Juan Mountains of Colorado so I guess you have to make the best of it with a few photos.
I am going to call this set of photos my comute to work or the World threw my Windshield.

Court House Peak.

Mnt Sniffles, I have been to the top of this 14er, during the summer of course.

Another view on the way up Dallas Divide, there is just bunches of snow in those basins. Beware of melt down this year.

This is a self supporting snake fence on Ralph Lorens property near the top of the Pass.

This is the old Whore house on top of Dallas Divide, back in the days of the R.R. the local ranchers had pens and would load their cattle on the train in this area, then the Cowboys would visit the ladys working out of this house. Ralph had this old Crib refurbished a few years ago.

This is Ralph’s million $, 7.5 mile long fence under lots of snow.
So that is part of my ugly commute to work in the winter.
See ya in the hills!

This has turned into a real Winter for us folks here on the western slope of Colorado, around the San Juan Mountains near Ouray, Telluride and Silverton. But it does make for some fine photo opts such as-

I took all of these from my new, second story porch, I love how the snow is blowing off the peaks of the San Juans.

Uncompahgre, Matterhorn and Wheterhorn threw this funky telephoto I got for Christmas.

Storm King of the Cimarons threw my Funk Wide Angle Lens I also got for Christmas.

The West Elks.

The Adobes in the Winter.

The Snow in the Trees around our house.

And this is our house and Porch that I took those photos from. The Winter is a great time for Photography but is getting old other wise, I can’t wait for Spring.

I had a unique opportunity to travel over the Uncompahgre Plateau on old highway 90 from Montrose to Nucla with a real interesting fellow name Bill Harris on a Archeology trip to check out a prehistoric site located on the Weimer ranch.
On top of the Plateau Bill showed me some cool Artwork carved in the Aspen trees, here is a selection of them.

These are all carved by lonely Sheep Herders, This fellow was getting ready to go to town, the highlight of the summer.

So he packed his bag and put on his best top hat and is heading to town. First stop will be at a Hotel so he can bath and shave, his beard has grown out a lot over the summer.

Is this a picture of a Hotel in town or maybe a Brothel, either way after spending the summer with a flock of Sheep I am sure he only has one thing on his mind.

Yes the Virgina of a Female is top on his list of thing to seek out in town and once he finds one well-

he hopes to bang some taters, make some love, have a roll in the sheet, do the dirty deed, I think you get my drift. So enough of the Alpine Pornography lets move on to the ancient ones.

I have seen some more impressive ancient ruins in my life but these are definitely some ruins.

There where several , what I like to call, Bowls in the floors of the ruins. But I thought the rock art was pretty cool.

Rock Art Guy #1.

Rock Art Guy #2.

Rock Art Guy #3, I call him Tricycle Man, it looks like he is doing some sort of trick on a Tricycle doesn’t it.
Our last stop was at an old Cave Dwelling, you know Cave Man, a real primitive lodge.

A primitive place to live and some primitive Rock Art to go along with it.
To wrap it up first I would like to share with you this Splash of Red. Second I was hoping to share with you an awesome landscape view from the top of the Uncompahgre Plateau looking out at the Mountains called Lone Cone and Little Cone and the back side of Mount Wilson but unfortunately the smoke from all of the fires in California had blown our way and it was difficult to see anything.

See Ya in the Hills!

I started my digital photography career with a Fugi Finepix 3800.
And all of the photos on my blogs to speak of where taken with my old reliable Fuji, except of course these shots that I got from my daughter. The quality seems poor even though the pixels are higher.

I have nothing but good to say about this camera it has survived rain storms and truck wrecks and still keeps clicking and producing great shots. I know that it is becoming ancient technologically speaking but it makes me happy. There is not a lot of adjustment and settings you can make but I have learned some tricks so I am going to start a series of posts on how to use the Fuji finepix 3800, 3.2 mege pixels,6x zoom and I would love to hear from folks out there who have some tricks of their own, so please comment.
So here is the intro now I need to work on the lessons.

As I rap up my summer in the San Juan Mountains in south western Colorado, the area located between Ouray, Silverton and Telluride also known as the Silver Triangle, I thought I would share some of my favorite Digital Photographs with you.

Sunset on the San Juans to include the Matterhorn, Whetterhorn and Uncompagre Peaks.

A nice sunrise over Court House and Chimney Rock from Ridgway Colorado.

These 2 photos where taken from Horse Fly Mesa one early morning on my way to Telluride.

Had an opportunity to take some shots of and around the Bridal Veil Hydroelectric Plant that sits above Bridal Veil Falls above Telluride Colorado.

A few flowers, Rosy Indian Paint Brush (my wife’s Favorite), Colorado Blue Columbines growing out of a rotten tree stump (you couldn’t do that if you tried) and these tough little yellow Tundra Flowers with leather like leaves.

A collection of some of the High Country structures still standing in the San Juans around telluride,Ouray and Silverton Colorado.

Some Funky Rocks.

And one of my favorite view of Lake Como. It was a fun summer and I can’t wait till the next one.

If you didn’t know I am a off-road tour guide in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado near the towns of Telluride, Ouray and Silverton. I was doing a tour on Sept 28, 2007 after a heck of a snow storm. The tour turned out to be a real adventure and I wrote all about it on my 4×4-offroad blog, but I did get this opportunity to take this great mirror lake shot at the start of my adventure.

This turned out to be the last tour of the Summer, I am not ready for winter yet.

Yet another fun photography adventure took place just a few days ago (22 Sept 07) when I had the opportunity to take up a group of photographers doing a work shop sponsored by the friends of the Arizona Highways. The leader of the group was a famous landscape photographer from Steamboat Springs named Jim Steinberg. So first of I would love to put in a plug for Jim’s Web site called www.portfoliopublications.com, it is very well done and I have already ordered one of his new 2008 calenders, and I am hot for one of his books called Colorado less traveled, maybe I can talk my daughter into getting it for me for Christmas.
Another neat person I got to know is a up and coming photographer named Colleen Miniuk-Sperry, she also has a well done Web Site called cms-photo.com. Colleen is from Chandler, Arizona and helped put this trip together.
We started this trip out from Ouray and headed up to Imogene Pass, I took this photo in Imogene Basin.

I call this the Camp Ground Sign, it is located just above the main portal of the Camp Bird Mine. I always thought that this was natural but I think I read that it was man made to divert Avalanches around a mine portal, but I can’t imagine.
We soon found our selves on top of Imogene pass in a Huricane but they all gathered together for a group shot.

Here is Colleen setting up her tripod for the group shot.

Here was the group shot. They are all practicing a technique taught to them by Jim (the guy with the leather hat in the front row) to determine where the light is coming from.
After this we started heading towards Telluride and lunch. After a fine lunch we headed back to Ouray by way of Last Dollar Road to try and find some fall colors and some lessons in looking close and within a given area.

The colors where not great but I was able to grab this shot.
Needless to say I had a great time and good fellowship with the whole group and I hope to meet them all again.

As my busy summer winds down I am starting to remember some of my Adventures and some of them where photography related so I thought I had better share them with you all. The first cool photography adventure took place early in the season, well before the roads where all open. A couple of dancers from Texas where in Telluride teaching a class and had brought there personal photographer so they could shoot some promo shots around the San Juan Mountains and hired me to take them up to the old town of Tomboy located in Savage Basin above Telluride.
I picked them up about 5:00 pm so we could take advantage of the setting sun. Our first stop was at the Social Tunnel, as the professional did his job I took the opportunity to learn and get a few shots of my own.

The female dancer at the Social Tunnel.

Here she is with her Photographer at the Social Tunnel above Telluride.
After the Social Tunnel we went to Tomboy where they took many shots in the old ruins then we went up into the upper part of Savage Basin as the Sun was getting very low and got some real cool shots.

Here is the happy couple messing around in the snow as there photographer searches for a memory card.

Here they are standing in the Sunset.

Then I took this cool shot of the sun setting from upper Savage Basin looking down toward Telluride. After this shot we loaded up in our ride and drove down the Tomboy road in the dark. I think the Dancers had a good time but I know that I did.
